Subject: Buying a property in Greece
Question: Could you provide me with useful information for buying a property in Greece. I currently live in Italy and I am interested in finding a property in Zakynthos island.

Special attention should be given to ensuring that property titles are legal and that the property in question is properly registered at the local land registry offices.

Certificate for 50% Exemption from Property

Transfer Tax When buying property in Greece using imported foreign funds, you are entitled to a 50% exemption from the property transfer tax. To receive this exemption, you need to provide:

- documents proving the money was imported into Greece
- proof that this money was used to buy the property
- a certificate from the appropriate Consulate stating that you have been employed outside Greece for more than six years in your lifetime
- proof that you are paid in a currency other than Greek drachmas.

- six years of tax return receipts
