The two most popular Greek soccer teams are Olympiakos and Panathinaikos.
Olympiakos was established March 10 1925, when the members of The Piraeus Soccer Association and The Group of Piraeus Soccer Fans decided in a historical assembly, the dissolution of these associations and the foundation of a new one.
Mr.Notis Kamberos announced the name "Olympiakos" and Mr.Michalis Manouskos completed it to the present name " Olympic Association of Piraeus Soccer Fans".
The Andrianopoulos brothers helped greatly to raise the fame and prestige of the team. Children of very known family in Piraeus,with athletic background, they made the name Olympiakos known throughout Greece. In the beginning, only four of the brothers played in the team. Shortly after they were joined by the fifth. These five offensive players became legends ('thrilos'). This is why Olympiakos is called "Thrilos'.
The teams emblem is the adolescent crowned bay and their colors are red-white.
The story of how Panathinaikos was born ...
In 1890, in the area of Exarhia, a few hundred meters away from the stadium of Panathinaikos in Athens(also called the Leoforos stadium because of its location at Alexandra Leoforos), George Calafatis was born, the founder of Panathinaikos. George Calafatis studied medicine at the University of Athens and gymnastics at the Academy of Gymnastics. He was a great talent in throw, jump and trace. However his passion rested with football. When he was 18 and already a champion in the team of Panellinios he was making efforts to create a football team. All the big fields in Athens, sited mainly at Goudi and Rouf, were the first football fields of the newborn Calafatis team. Moreover when Panellinios refused to proceed to the founding of an official football team, George Calafatis created the ancestor team of Panathinaikos, called Athens Football Club. This was in autumn 1908.
Among the founders, except George Calafatis, were his brother Alexander who also was the first president, D. Doukakis, P. Bouboulis, E Chricis (vice president), Granitsas, Mantzakos, Papageorgiou, Gaetas, Demertzis, I. Stavropoulos, Pashos, Misakian, Reppas, Sapounias, Garoufalias.
The teams emblem is the shamrock and their colors are green-white.
