>> Q&A about Greek Language
Subject: |
Speaking Classical Greek in Greece |
Question: |
I can write and speak Classical Greek (e.g. Demosthenes, Isokrates), and I am going to Greece on holiday: will I be understood by average Greeks? |
Answer: |
 |
Thank you for contacting us. Well, unfortunately the majority of young Greek men and women are not very familiar with Classical Greek (We call it Ancient Greek). The reason is that the education system of Greece does not focus as much - as it should - on the teaching of Ancient Greek to students. In the last few years some efforts have been made so that future generations of Greek adults will be more familiar with Ancient Greek.
Generally, most of Greeks will certainly understand some of your phrases/words in Ancient Greek language but educated older people will be much better to deal with. Be prepared though, to receive strange comments when speaking this language as Greeks are not used to it!
We wish you a magnificent holiday in Greece! |
